About Zia
Personality: Affectionate, Curious, Friendly, Loyal, Playful
Zia, our 6 month old 40 pound puppy, was found stray. Suspected to be a shepherd mix, Zia has short, chubby legs; perhaps there's a basset hound or a corgi in her family? Zia's heritage was not her only mystery. We also had to figure out why she was limping.
When we took in Zia after she was found stray, we diagnosed her with fractures of both of her shin bones. However, as the fractures healed, Zia didn't seem to get much better. After consulting with a specialist, we found out that Zia's main source of pain was hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia causes the ball of the hip to pop our of the socket. We won't know if Zia needs surgery to correct this for 1-2 years- she could easily get more comfortable as she matures.
Zia is doing great on pain medications. She'll need to stay on these until it's known if she needs a hip replacement. Thanks to the @15/10Foundation for covering Zia's care in its entirety, her adopters won't have to worry about the cost. Zia's adoption fee, her first training class, her pain medications AND, if she needs it, her hip surgery will be completely covered.
Zia is a playful, sweet puppy who is wickedly smart. She is food motivated, crate trained, potty trained and quiet in the house, Zia really strives to be a good girl. She's also a puppy who needs guidance and ongoing training. Zia hasn't quite mastered leash manners, for example. Since she's only been alive for 6 months, we'll cut her some slack.
Due to her painful hips, Zia can sometimes be grumpy. If she's grumpy, she can get snappy. With the pain medications and training, Zia has gotten much better. She loves to cuddle and really bonds with her people. Zia has been good with calm dogs and dog savvy cats, but she's still learning not to guard her food. Because of this, we don't recommend kids in Zia's home. Her housemates should be patient; living with a puppy isn't always a walk in the park.
Zia is microchipped and current on her flea and heartworm preventatives.
